SIL’s space-qualified Li-Ion Polymer Intelli-Pack® Battery was chosen for Lockheed Martin’s Extended Medium Range Ballistic Missile (eMRBM) in support of the Missile Defense Agency’s (MDA) Ballistic Mission Defense System (BMDS). Lockheed Martin approved SIL as a supplier after thorough review of its AS9100C Quality Management System. SIL designed, qualified and manufactured flight units worth $5M in their onsite facility in Santa Maria, CA.

SIL’s smart battery technology provided significantly higher energy density (200Wh/Kg), reliability and operational capability. The Li-Ion Polymer Intelli-Pack® Battery is also 1/3 the weight of Ni-Cad and Silver Zinc battery technologies and saved over 150 lbs for the eMRBM.

The missile was successfully tested on September 10, 2013 against multiple targets. This MDA Flight Test Operational-01 (FTO-01), demonstrated integrated, layered and regional missile defense capabilities in a live-fire operational test.
